Bone spurs, also called osteophytes, are bony growth that forms on a normal bone. Bone spurs -- usually found on the spine, shoulders, hands, hips, knees or feet -- limit joint movement and often cause pain. Bone spurs on the spine can put pressure on nerves causing pain, numbness or tingling sensations in the hands and feet. Bone Spur Symptoms In most cases, bone spurs cause no symptoms and are found when an X-ray is done for another condition. When symptoms are present they include: Joint Pain Loss of motion in joint Bone spurs on the spine may press on nerves causing pain, numbness or tingling sensations in other parts of the body. Bone spurs on the neck may grow inward making it difficult to swallow or breath, or they may push against veins in the neck restricting blood flow to the brain.
Bone spurs form as the body tries to repair itself by building extra bone. It generally forms in response to pressure, rubbing, or stress that continues over a long period of time. Some bone spurs form as part of the aging process. As we age, the slippery tissue called cartilage that covers the ends of the bones within joints breaks down and eventually wears away (osteoarthritis). Also, the discs that provide cushioning between the bones of the spine may break down with age. Over time, this leads to pain and swelling and, in some cases, bone spurs forming along the edges of the joint. Bone spurs due to aging are especially common in the joints of the spine and feet.
Endoscopic spinal foraminotomy may be needed if conservative treatment fails to provide relief.Using an endoscope, the spinal nerve is located and protected while the spinal bone spur is vaporized using a laser or removed using a mechanical tool. While endoscopic surgery is easier for the patient because it entails a much smaller incision and provides a much quicker recovery time than open surgery, it requires special skills, training and experience.
It is strongly recommended that a Board Certified Spine Surgeon perform these surgeries.
